Impact strength

Using the Instron Impact 9050, the Charpy impact strength, also known as impact toughness, is determined. The impact test, also referred to as the notched-bar impact test, measures the toughness of a material. This is determined by striking the material with a hammer of a certain force. The energy absorbed during this process indicates the material’s toughness. A material that absorbs little energy will break easily and is considered very brittle, while a material that absorbs a lot of energy will be less likely to break and is therefore tough.

The impact test is typically conducted according to ISO 179.
